VDF SIG Report April 2009
Held at Asckey Data Services Ltds premises, a very full day, including a late addition to the agenda from Nils Mattiesen, who flew over from Switzerland provided a lot of insight into future directions for Visual DataFlex development.
The overall impression is
- The VDF Development Studio is now mature, being complete as Data Access envisaged when embarking on the enhancement from pre V12.
- VDF support now covers the full range of windows related environments, including Windows Vista, Windows Terminal Services and Citrix. These are all of major importance, but being able to tick the works on Vista box is a huge plus. Plenty of applications dont!
- Web applications continue to grow in importance. We are now starting to see web applications built with Visual DataFlex coming into use, and looking ahead to version 15 this is where the emphasis will lie.
Visual Report Writer
Meantime, Data Access have embarked on a back to basics Windows report writer, recognising that Crystal has now grown far from its roots as a user friendly report writing tool, and has become so difficult support for the DataFlex data file format that a gap has opened up here. Between this Visual Report Writer, and the next version of Dynamic AI gaining close integration with VDF applications, from both a cost and functional point of view, we will, later this year, have a completely new set of possibilities in place for creating both paper and Web report output. First test release is expected very soon - before end April.
VDF 14 and beyond
Nick Nikijuluw kicked off with a reprise of the V 14 development. This covered the now in place Vista, TS and Citrix support mentioned above, and re-emphasised that while previous versions were known to work, now Data Access formally supports these environments....
